NEWS FROM A LOST WORLD

We spoke to the artist Bruno Vergauwen on creating this iconic poster for Rock Werchter.

It was an honour to create something for such an iconic band. I was commissioned by Collectionzz who have been working with the Cure for most of their tour posters. And yes, to my surprise Robert was very much involved in the creative process. For example, just before the print went to press he wanted me to add his wedding ring. Although it includes a few visual references to classics like “The Forest,” “Lullaby,” “Burn,” and “The Funeral Party,” my main goal was to capture the essence of the band. It’s about the music, not the person—the veil conceals identity and removes ego. The white sheet creates a soft, ghostly, introspective mood. The red lips stand out as a symbol of storytelling and love, while also nodding to Robert Smith’s iconic look. The lamb and crow once again reflect that blend of innocence and darkness.

Tribute to Perry Bamonte, 1960 - 2025

We remember a truly special man—one who touched the hearts of all who knew him., a
To fans, Perry will be remembered not only for his immense contribution to the band, both on
and off stage, but for the warmth, kindness, and generosity he shared so freely. He didn’t
simply meet fans; he sought their company, often spending hours talking, laughing, or even
joining them for legendary late-night swims in hotel pools after shows! He repaid devotion
with genuine respect, never taking for granted the vital role fans play in keeping the music
alive. His openness and generosity of spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate
enough to meet him.

Many remember the thrill of those first photos emerging ahead of the opening show in Riga
on 6th October 2022: an extra keyboard, left-handed guitars—could it really be? The excitement
of knowing Perry had “come home,” back where he belonged, was met with pure joy,
especially by those who had been there the first time and understood exactly what he
brought to the band.

We last spoke to Perry at Wembley Arena in December 2022. Though surrounded by friends
and family, he still took time to stop and speak with us. It’s rare to meet someone who
remains so grounded while reaching such heights, but Perry was that rarity. He will be
deeply missed, not only for his talent, but for the remarkable kindness he carried with him.
Perry Bamonte was the embodiment of generosity and a soul who truly cherished The Cure
fan community. For us at CureNews, he will always be remembered with gratitude, affection,
and respect—an artist, a friend, and an enduring part of The Cure’s history, both on and off
stage.

Fly high dear Teddy, forever in our hearts.

The Cure are to release the 1986 mix of Boys Don’t Cry, making it available digitally for the first time ever in line with its 40th Anniversary. Initially released as a standalone single in the summer of 1979, Boys Don’t Cry became the title track of the US edition of the band’s debut album, Three Imaginary Boys. The song went on to become one of the band’s signature tracks and achieved international success in 1986, when Robert Smith re-recorded the vocal and remixed the backing track. Although this new version was created to promote the best of collection Staring At The Sea – The Singles, the LP itself featured the original recording, and the 7-inch version of Boys Don’t Cry (New Voice – New Mix), now retitled Boys Don’t Cry (86 Mix), is being released for the first time ever as a CD single. Boys Don’t Cry (86 Mix), the 12” mix, and the B-Sides, Plastic Passion, Pillbox Tales, and Do The Hansa have been remastered by Matt Colton.

“I RE-SANG IT IN 1986 BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD DO A BIT MORE WITH THE SONG – I FELT I WAS IMPROVING AS A SINGER, BECOMING MORE CONFIDENT – SO ALTHOUGH I DIDN’T REALLY DEVIATE TOO MUCH FROM THE ORIGINAL VOCAL MELODY OR PHRASING, I KNEW I COULD GET A BIT MORE TONE AND EMOTION INTO THE REWORK.” ROBERT SMITH

RE-SUNG AND REMIXED TO BE THE ‘LEAD SINGLE’ ON THE ‘STANDING ON A BEACH’ SINGLES COMPILATION, THE MIX WAS RELEASED ON VINYL AND AS AUDIO ACCOMPANYING THE NEW VIDEO, BUT IT WAS NEVER INCLUDED ON THE COMPILATION ITSELF, NOR ON ANY SUBSEQUENT ‘GREATEST HITS’ RELEASES, NOR HAS IT EVER BEEN AVAILABLE DIGITALLY – UNTIL NOW!

Memories of The Cure MTV unplugged 24/1/1991

I don't remember how I found out about the recording, I might have phoned up Fiction records as I did back then and asked them what the band were up to? I must have been aware of the Wembley arena Great British music week concert a week before and the 5 Imaginary boys show , both of which I brought tickets for. At this time I had yet to met Janie, but was a member of the fanclub. (We also drank in the same pub from time to time)
I remember the surreal feeling of stepping into Fountain Studios in Wembley (Now a McDonalds) on that cold January in 1991. It was the kind of evening that feels alive with anticipation, the air electric as music fans buzzed about what was about to happen. This wasn’t just any gig—it was The Cure, stripped back and unplugged, something that felt almost intimate for a band known for their lush, layered soundscapes.
The lights were dim, casting a soft glow on the small stage where the band’s setup waited, scattered with acoustic guitars, a baby grand piano, and unusual percussive instruments. The eclectic, almost whimsical arrangement mirrored the essence of The Cure playful yet deeply emotive.
When Robert Smith walked onto the stage with his iconic wild hair and smudged eyeliner, the crowd broke into a very quiet cheer, trying to stay respectful of the recording. He gave a shy smile, that awkward charm of his, and then they started.
Between songs, Robert mumbled in his endearingly awkward way, sharing snippets of insight about the tracks. At one point looking over towards my side of the room for some sort of acknowledgement on how the songs were sounding to us the audience. The band’s chemistry shone as they laughed together, seemingly enjoying the laid-back nature of the session. It felt like a glimpse behind the curtain.
Even now, every time I hear the recordings from that night, it transports me back to Fountain Studios, to that incredible evening where The Cure made magic with nothing more than their raw talent and acoustic instruments. I left with a sense of having witnessed something extraordinary—The Cure reimagined, revealing the core of their music in a way that felt both delicate and timeless.

Annie and Nick are joined by Robert Smith to review the year in music. He’s the lead singer of The Cure, one of the UK’s most influential bands ever - they’ve headlined Glastonbury 4 times, sold over 35 million albums, and their 2024 album, Songs of a Lost World, was one of the most talked about records on Sidetracked this year. 2024 was the year of the pop girlies, with Charli XCX and Chappell Roan dominating the charts and the discourse – Annie and Nick ask Robert what he thinks of it all. And the debate around ticket pricing reached boiling point this year after Oasis fans were blindsided by their use of dynamic pricing, who should take responsibility? Plus, Robert talks about releasing new music for the first time in 16 years, shares his real thoughts about that viral clip from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame red carpet, and reveals his favourite star.

Set your alarms for an exclusive chat on BBC Radio 1  23:00 on the 23re December !

From RADIO 1 DJ Daniel Carter from his instagram :

On Wednesday night, Robert came into Radio 1 to talk with me about ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ by The Cure.
It was great to discuss the lost world referenced in the title, thoughts of growing older, some surprise at how well it’s been received and details about some of the songs on the record. It’s a great listen, in depth, sprawling and very funny at times.
When I initially said it would be great to try and get a few minutes with RS on the phone, I never expected that quick chat to suddenly turn into speaking in person for half an hour. For it to then morph into hour and a half long conversation coupled with a few cans of Guinness was pretty special.

There will be a load of our conversation on The Rock Show on the evening of December 23rd, along with some words from a selection of other artists who have been inspired by The Cure and have professed their love for the band.
Hopefully I can get the full thing online as well. Maybe as an episode of @swimpodcast we’ll see…
If you haven’t already checked out the number one album, ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ I can’t recommend it enough. It’s very beautiful, thematically heavy and it’s my album of the year.

THE CURE LIVE AT TROXY, LONDON, RECORDED NOV 1ST A free global live stream marking the release of the new album Songs Of A Lost World, out now.

View from our seats in the balcony row 32-33.

Last night's Cure show at the Troxy in London was nothing short of magic! Robert Smith and the band delivered a stunning, career-spanning set that felt both intimate and epic in the historic venue. The sound was perfectly dialed in, Smith’s voice was hauntingly clear, and every note seemed to resonate with the audience. They played the new album in full  and all classics – "Pictures of You," "A Forest," and "Lovesong" had everyone singing along, while lesser-played 'Secrets' was a real treat for the '17 Seconds set.'
The band was in peak form, with Simon Gallup’s bass driving that dark, moody energy, and Smith was visibly moved, flashing that iconic smile between songs. The crowd was a mix of longtime fans and newer ones, all equally mesmerized. The encore was unforgettable, leaving us all drenched in nostalgia and adrenaline. It was a night that reminded us exactly why The Cure remain one of the most enduring and beloved bands in history.

Robert Smith was interviewed by Matt Everitt at Abbey Road Studios.

The interview was particularly notable for the following highlights:

Reflecting on The Cure's Legacy: Robert Smith reflected on the band's journey over the past 40 years. He shared his thoughts on their evolution, the different phases of their career, and how they managed to stay relevant over four decades while maintaining their distinct sound and style.

Songwriting and Influences: Smith delved into his creative process, discussing how he approaches songwriting, the influences behind some of the band’s most iconic songs, and the emotional intensity he pours into their music. He mentioned the challenges and joys of writing songs over such a long career and how his experiences have shaped his music.

Robert Smith has been an outspoken critic of dynamic ticket pricing, particularly when it comes to its impact on fans. Dynamic pricing, often used by ticket platforms like Ticketmaster, adjusts ticket prices based on real-time demand, which can cause prices to skyrocket for popular events.

In March 2023, The Cure announced their Shows of a Lost World North American tour, and Smith made headlines for his vocal opposition to Ticketmaster’s use of dynamic pricing. He wanted to keep ticket prices as affordable as possible for fans, and The Cure initially avoided offering VIP packages or using the dynamic pricing model for their tickets. However, when tickets went on sale, fans reported extremely high fees, with some fees being higher than the face value of the tickets themselves. Robert expressed his frustration on 'X', saying he was “sickened” by the excessive fees, and he vowed to work on behalf of the fans to address the situation. He contacted Ticketmaster, and the company eventually agreed to issue partial refunds for certain ticket purchases, a rare move in the ticketing industry.
